Cultural Infusion and Motion Studies in Film

Cultural Infusion and Motion Studies in Film explores the transformation of images and depictions of African culture in film. This piece is composed of Disney VHS film. Many of the early Disney films lacked cultural representations of cultures from the continent of Africa and the cultures of African Diaspora. Diversity and Representation are very important as the films were consumed as pop culture, but these lacked colored characters and roles. I wanted to use this very media and medium that failed to share African culture to create something that celebrated and highlighted this very culture. The performance of dance is a form of expression in many African cultures and therefore allows me to share this experience with the viewer. The rhythmic movements and wide range of motion shows off this suit in a way that entrances the viewers. It becomes a symphonic and mesmerizing figure capturing attention and highlighting the motion of the medium. The mask hides the identity of the figure, representing the cultures as a whole rather than an individual.
