This body of work traverses the stories of this transient landscape to highlight the dance between culture, identity, place, and craft that is represented by the Everglades and the many Black and Indigenous stories that have called home. &nbsp; &nbsp; The main installation, Porch Passages: Creole Collage,&nbsp; reimagines the shotgun house, a staple vernacular architecture of the U.S. South and Caribbean. Showcasing an architectural language of creolization, this structure influenced by the merging of craft and culture embeds the stories of Miami’s Black and Caribbean community into it’s materiality. Through a series of mixed media wood collages created in collaboration with the archives of Black Miami Dade and it’s Founder Nadege Green. The Stories of Black Miami Dade become enshrined in memory and depiction of the architectural form. The central seating of the reimagined shotgun house creates a porch pace, creating a moment for reflections, preservation, and imagination. Not only does the installation archive, and document these stories, but it provides a space for them to be actively lived, performed, and preserved for&nbsp; future generations. In South Florida, Marronage calls to mind Seminole communities, freedmen, and Black and Afro-Indigenous peoples who sought refuge in the state’s natural landscapes—building self-sustaining societies within the wild. &nbsp; &nbsp; This body of work carries the movement and spirit of masquerade traditions such as Junkanoo, along with other African practices that have traveled through these landscapes, bridging the Caribbean and the U.S. South. It speaks to movement, migration, history, and deep rootedness in place. Dance is explored between landscapes and cultures, creating a borderland where identity is always in motion, always in flux. The figures merge with the environment, becoming a humanoid form intertwined with the flora and terrain of these territories. Inspired by his 2023 residency in Suriname with the Diaspora Vibe Cultural Arts Institute, Tulloch examines the Angisa, a traditional Afro-Surinamese headkerchief, as a symbol of storytelling and cultural preservation. &nbsp; &nbsp; The exhibition includes works that blend figures and natural landscapes, exploring themes of Marronage and masquerade as tools of survival and identity. Using cold wax, UV printing, and mixed media, Tulloch combines photographic archives with painterly techniques to create layered, dimensional works. Pieces like The Raft of Samaaka and Forest Teller reflect his personal relationships with Surinamese communities and explore connections between history, memory, and the natural world. &nbsp; &nbsp; The gallery features decorative wood carvings, sublimation-printed tapestries, and hanging Angisas that highlight Suriname's Maroon heritage and Dutch colonial influences. Locust Projects from December 5, 2023, to February 17, 2024. This architectural installation creates a communal space for cultural exchange, storytelling, and creative expression. &nbsp; &nbsp; Set in the ruins of a Miami home’s porch space, the installation reflects on the dystopian future shaped by climate gentrification in the city. Through projection, video, and architectural interventions, Poetics of Place poses questions about the cultures at risk of being lost amid rising tides and new development. The work explores the memories and presence of Miami’s past, present, and future, offering a cultural stage for what must be preserved. &nbsp; &nbsp; Tulloch, as both an artist and architect, uses the installation to highlight underrepresented stories and lived experiences of Miami’s Black communities. The project examines how space shapes cultural identity and how cultural identity cultivates landscapes.
